The poet here Recollects a love which has almost died. it is not also clear to whom this poem is addressed. Hardy had several love affairs in the whole of his life, but most of them were very unhappy.
This poem had been written as early as 1867, so this poem could not have been addressed to his wife. his married life also proved to be a failover in the long run.
Most Probably the woman here was Harry's cousin. Tryphena sparks with whom Hardy had an intense and passionate relationship which, however, ended intention and bitterness. This poem has been greatly praised by critics as well as by the general reader.
Poem
We stood by a pond that winter day,
And the sun was white, as though chidden of God,
And a few leaves lay on the starving sod;
They had fallen from an ash, and were gray.
Your eyes on me were as eyes that rove
Over tedious riddles of years ago;
And some words played between us to and fro
On which lost the more by our love.
The smile on your mouth was the deadest thing
Alive enough to have strength to die;
And a grin of bitterness swept thereby
Like an ominous bird a-wing...
Since then, keen lessons that love deceives,
And wrings with wrong, have shaped to me
Your face, and the God-curst sun, and a tree,
And a pond edged with grayish leaves.
Hardy’s dark and Somber view Of love and life had deep roots in inexperience as well as in temperament. However, The Identity of the woman in this poem is not essential for us to know in order to understand or appreciate the poem.
The subject of the poem is the death of a love affair
that came to an end because of certain MISunderstandings and certain problems
which cropped up between the lovers. it is the sense of dissolution that the
lover in this poem expresses.
The substance of the Poem 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐞
The mood of the poem is wishful. The nature of the poem is reminiscent. what the poetry collects where is a wintry day when the poet found that his beloved attitude towards him had undergone a change.
The beloved hand one that day looked at the poet with which seemed to be worried about certain problems which had made their appearance in the relationship with him.
Even certain words which he and she try to speak to each other on his occasion seem to be of no help to them. a bitter smile on the beloved mouth showed that the love affair was at an ENd.
her smile was portentous Like a bird of ill omen. In the last stanza, the poet draws certain Lessons from his experience.
He finds that love can deceive a man and that love can cause great pain to the main. The poet's experience of love has proved to be the most painful one, and he has found his beloved to be faithless and False.
but he has not forgotten that day in winter when she stood
by his side, close to a pond, with the Sun shining only with dim light, and
with the grey leaves of an ash tree lying on the bank of the pond.
